Aliquippa Battles Allentown Central Catholic Tonight For Spot In Class 4A Football Championship

You know what’s better than one championship? Two championships.

Over their history, the Aliquippa Quips have won plenty of championships in both WPIAL (19) and PIAA (4) playoff action. But for the second year in a row–and the third time in 5 years under coach Mike Warfield–the Quips look to get two championships in one year as they battle Allentown Central Catholic tonight in the Class 4A Semifinals at Bald Eagle Area High School. The winner moves on to the PIAA Finals next Thursday night at 7:00 PM at Chapman Field on the campus of Cumberland Valley High School.

Aliquippa (12-0) enters the game as champions already, winning the WPIAL Class 4A title in their last game over Central Valley by a tally of 34-7. Despite finishing the regular season at 5-5, the Vikings (9-5) are on a hot streak, having won their last four games to take the District 11 championship and pull off back-to-back upsets of the Bulldogs in the PIAA playoffs–a 38-31 overtime win over Jersey Shore in the first round, and a 50-7 drubbing of Meadville last week.

Beaver County Radio will have coverage of this Class 4A Semifinal match from Bald Eagle Area High School tonight, as coverage begins at 6:30 PM for pregame. Kickoff from Centre County commences at 7:00 PM between Aliquippa and Allentown Central Catholic on 95.7 FM, 99.3 FM, 1230 WBVP, 1460 WMBA. along with the Trib Live High School Sports Network.

Penguins Letang Out Indefinitely After 2nd Stroke

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Kris Letang is out indefinitely after suffering a stroke. General manager Ron Hextall announced Tuesday that the 35-year-old Letang had the stroke Monday. Letang was a last-minute scratch in a 3-2 overtime loss to Carolina with an undisclosed illness. The team said Letang is not experiencing “any lasting effects” and is undergoing testing. This is the second stroke Letang has suffered during his 17-year career. The three-time Stanley Cup champion missed more than two months in 2014 after a stroke, which doctors determined was caused by a small hole in the wall of his heart.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed veteran first baseman/designated hitter Carlos Santana to a one-year contract. The deal is worth $6.75 million. The arrival of the 36-year-old gives the young Pirates an experienced hitter who the team hopes will serve as a role model in 2023. The switch-hitting Santana split time between Kansas City and Seattle in 2022, hitting .202 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs. He provided some much-needed pop to Seattle’s lineup after arriving in a trade in June, slugging 15 home runs to help the Mariners reach the postseason for the first time since 2001.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Brett Pesce scored at the end of a two-on-none 2:20 into overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes past the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. The Penguins forced the extra period on Jake Guentzel’s deflection with 58 seconds to go in regulation. The Hurricanes escaped with the victory on a breakaway that Pesce converted for his second goal of the season. Guentzel and Sidney Crosby scored for Pittsburgh. Tristan Jarry stopped 36 shots but was left all alone on the sequence that ended with Pesce’s winner.

Hockey enthusiasts and fans of the brand can pick up a 30-pack of 12 oz cans of Pittsburgh Penguins themed Labatt Blue and Labatt Blue Light or 15-pack of Labatt Blue at major retail locations and convenience stores throughout Pittsburgh. Individual 24 oz cans will be available at convenience stores.

“Penguins hockey means so much to Pittsburgh and Labatt beer drinkers,” said Corey Berger, associate brand manager, Labatt. “Through this program, we connect fans to their favorite team while they’re pre-gaming or cheering from their couch.”

In addition to the cans, a QR code on the outside package directs consumers to a Labatt Team Fan page, where fans can enter for a chance to win a pair of tickets to a 2022/2023 Pittsburgh Penguins home game.  Eight winners will be selected randomly.

Over the last few years, Labatt has created custom NHL cans for teams including the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings and the Philadelphia Flyers. “The team designs are unique making these cans collectible,” said Berger.

Aliquippa Rolls Past Central Valley to Win 4A WPIAL Championship

The Quips met the Warriors for a rematch of their final regular season game, except this time the game was the WPIAL championship at Acrisure Stadium.  Aliquippa dominated the game from the start, not letting CV move on their first possession. Once the Quips got their hand on the ball, they gained yards and ran the clock.  Quip scored 7 in the first, followed by 7 in the second without a response from the Warriors.  The teams entered the lock room at halftime with a score Aliquippa 14 Central Valley 0.  in the second half Quip continued their roll, even recovereing an onside kick which may or may not have been intentional by the Quips. Central Valley managed to get on the board late in the fourth but it was too little too late. The Quips are the 4A WPIAL champs with a final score Aliquippa 34 Central Valley 7.

Steel Valley Wins Double A Crown As Turnover Bug Bites the Tigers Again

(Pittsburgh, Pa.) It was a beautiful late fall day in Pittsburgh and it presented the perfect backdrop as the Steel Valley Ironmen battled the Beaver Falls Tigers for the WPIAL 2A Crown from Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
The game kicked-off at 2:00 PM and Steel Valley scored right off the bat and took an early 6-0 lead courtesy of Cruce Brookins 56 yd run. The two point conversion attempted was no good. Beaver Falls then struck right back off of a Trey Singleton 24 yd pass from Jaren Brickner. Da’Sean Anderson then caught a pass from Brickner for the two point conversion and the Tigers led 8-6. That was the last time Beaver Falls led as the turnover bug bit the Tigers.  Cruce Brookins. then scored on a  53 yard run for his second touchdown of the game. AJ Karstetter added the extra point and Steel Valley led 13-6 with 1:30 seconds left in the first quarter. The Tigers then received the kick-off and took over on offense. Brickner then threw a pick six before the end of the first quarter  as Donald Barksdale picked off the pass and returned it 53 yards to make it 20-8.
The teams went to the locker room at half-time with the score remaining 20-8. The Tigers turned the ball over three times in the first half.
The Tigers got back on the scoreboard early in the third quarter after being aided by a pass interference penalty. Da’talian Beauford scampered in from three yards out and the Tigers cut the Ironmen’s lead down to 20-14. The Tigers wouldn’t get any closer as on the ensuing kickoff a 53-yard return by Da’Ron Barksdale gave the Ironmen a short field at the Beaver Falls 22. Two plays later, Brookins scored on a 5-yard run to make it 27-14. Late in the fourth quarter, Steel Valley’s Donald Barksdale capped the scoring by racing 56 yards for a touchdown and securing the victory for the Ironmen.

Unfortunately the turnover bug bit the Tigers again this year in the first half and Steel Valley beat the Tigers 34-14 to win the Double A crown.
