April NFL draft on schedule, no public events in Las Vegas

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL will proceed with its draft but without public events next month in Las Vegas. It’s not yet clear, however, if the draft itself will be held in the city. Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday the draft will take place April 23-25 as scheduled but under a modified format still being developed. The draft will be televised regardless of its venue or format.

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has pushed back opening day until mid-May at the earliest because of the coronavirus. The move came Monday after the federal government recommended restricting events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement following a conference call with executives of the 30 teams. MLB says it is committed to playing as many games as possible when the season begins. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Sunday that gatherings of 50 people or more be canceled or postponed across the country for the next eight weeks.
Beaver Falls Dominates in Victory
The Beaver Falls Tigers defeated Carylnton Cougars 62-44 tonight. The Tigers dominated on both sides all game. The Tigers took an early lead in the first quarter, but then the Tigers started to turn it up a notch. Coming out the second quarter on fire lighting it up behind the ark, the Tigers took a 12 point lead going into the half. The Tigers did not led up in the second half as they kept up their tenacious defense causing all sort of problems for the Carlynton. The Tigers take on Lincoln Park on Saturday at place and time to be decided.

Central Valley Falls Short
The Central Valley Lady Warriors fell to the North Catholic Lady Trojans 53-49. It was a hard fought game for the Lady Warriors but their effort was not enough. What looked to be a blow out win for the the Trojans quickly turned into a battle. The Lady Trojans took an early 10-3 lead in the first. But, the Lady Warriors stormed back going on a 16-5 run to end the first quarter. Both teams kept up the tenacity in the second quarter making it a 2 point game going into halftime. The second half looked promising for the Warriors but ultimately they could not stop the Trojans.

North Catholic Defeats Aliquippa!
Aliquippa and North Catholic met for a playoff game of basketball. Both teams demonstrated power out of the gate, early in the game. Aliquippa started off with a short lived lead but North Catholic quickly responded. Both teams kept it close and ended the first quarter with a score of 16-13 in favor of North Catholic. The rest of the first half continued with the same momentum, although North Catholic maintained their lead with a first half score of 35-28. In the second half, the Quips fired back with a strong comeback and brought the score difference down to 1. Ultimately, Aliquippa couldn’t take the lead to seal the deal and North Catholic won the game with a final score of 68-62.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Justin Champagnie scored a career-high 31 points, and Pittsburgh defeated Wake Forest 81-72 in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Trey McGowens scored 14 points and Xavier Johnson added 10 points and eight assists for the Pitt (16-16), the tournament’s 13th seed. Twelfth-seeded Wake Forest was led by Olivier Sarr’s 20 points and 13 rebounds. Isaiah Mucius had 19 points and Brandon Childress added 17 for the Demon Deacons (13-18). Pitt advances to play NC State in the second round on Wednesday.

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — Robert Morris used a strong second half surge to defeat rival Saint Francis, 77-67, in the Northeast Conference tournament championship. Dante Treacy, AJ Bramah, Josh Williams and Yannis Mendy all scored in double-figures as the top-seeded Colonials extended a nine-point halftime lead to as much as 19 in the second half en route to a convincing win in front of an electric home crowd on Peoples Court at the UPMC Events Center. Keith Braxton led the Red Flash with 22 points.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Evgeni Malkin scored two goals and set up another to lead the slumping Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils. Evan Rodrigues and defensemen Justin Schultz and Kris Letang also scored as the Penguins won for only the third time in 11 games. Matt Murray made 20 saves to help Pittsburgh reach 40 wins for the seventh straight season and 13th time since 2006-07. The only exception was the 48-game lockout-shortened season in 2012-13. Nikita Gusev and Miles Wood scored for New Jersey, which won its previous two games. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 28 shots but the last-place Devils dropped to 6-3-2 in their last 11.
Beaver Advances to the Quarter Finals
The Beaver Lady Bobcats defeated Penn Cambria Lady Panthers 48-36 in a back and forth showdown. It was all the Lady Bobcats in the first quarter starting the game on a 8-0 run, and kept their foot on the pedal taking a commanding 14-2 lead at the end of the first. But, that was not enough to stop Penn Cambria as they opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run and later cut the lead going into the half to 2 points.But, despite all their efforts it was not enough as the Lady Beavers started the second half on fire and kept up the pressure on the Lady Panthers. Resulting in a Beaver Bobcats victory, the Lady Bobcats play the Tyrone Golden Eagles, Friday at an unknown place and time.
