The year was 1988, and Aliquippa took their national rank of #5 into Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, putting it on the line against the Blackhawk Cougars in a rematch from earlier in the ’88 season. The winner would take home the Class AAA football crown and advance to the PIAA playoffs.
The year is 2020, and Beaver County Radio is presenting an encore broadcast of that match between the rivals from 1988 for another trip down the astroturfed memory lane.
Things get underway at 5:00 PM as Beaver County Radio sports director Bob Barrickman hosts a roundtable discussion about that long-ago November day with the two head coaches in that game: Aliquippa’s Don Yanessa and Blackhawk’s Joe Hamilton. The show will feature many other players and personnel calling in; including former WBVP play-by-play man Mark Razz, who called the game with Barrickman and Tom Rotundo back in 1988. The roundtable discussion will also be broadcast on Facebook Live.
Then at 6 PM, Beaver County Radio will present the rebroadcast of the 1988 WPIAL Class AAA Championship football match from Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh between Aliquippa and Blackhawk. You can hear the entire broadcast in its entirety on 1230 WBVP, 1460 WMBA, 99.3 FM, beavercountyradio.com, and now with the Beaver County Radio Mobile App.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Bud Dupree is betting on himself once again. Dupree and the Steelers failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension during the offseason, meaning Dupree will likely become a free agent next spring. The Steelers placed the franchise tag on Dupree in March after he had a career-high 11 1/2 sacks in 2019. Dupree says he’s eager to prove his production last season wasn’t a fluke. He added that it’s “bittersweet” that his time with the Steelers is nearing an end but remains confident he will find the right landing spot in 2021.
(Beaver Falls, Pa.) Lion Legacy was a celebration of the 1980 New Brighton Lions Football team that appeared in the 1980 W.P.I.A.L. Championship game against the Seton la Salle Rebels.
Beaver County Radio Sports Director Bob Barrickman was the host of the round table discussion that celebrated that magical season on Oak Hill back in 1980. Following the round table celebration Beaver County Radio stepped back to that magical night where the Lions came up just short of the W.P.I.A.L. Championship losing to the Rebels 14-12. Beaver County Radio Legendary broadcasters Chris Shovlin and Jay Knaflec had the call from Moe Rubenstein Stadium in Ambridge.
Lion Legacy started with team members John Vukich, Don Mittner, Brian Debo and Doug Campbell talking about the season and how the Lions were decimated by graduation and weren’t given much of a chance by the local papers to do anything in 1980. The guys reminisced about the schedule that year as they went week by week with Bob Barrickman through the season.

In the second segment of the show Head Coach Larry Matrazzo joined Matt Edgell, Brian Debo Craig Vukich and Bob Barrickman. The Talk then shifted to the nasty 1980 New Brighton Defense that was rarely scored on throughout the entire season.

The show even featured team members Scott Herr, Mike Pinchotti, and Mark Herman calling in to celebrate with their team from their homes throughout the United States.

The Night was finished in the final segment with what is believed to be the three final living members of the 1951 W.P.I.A.L. Championship New Brighton Football Team.

Pennsylvania board clears fall school sports to begin
By MICHAEL RUBINKAM Associated Press
The governing body for Pennsylvania interscholastic sports decided Friday to move forward with the fall season, rejecting the governor’s recommendation that all youth sports be postponed until 2021 to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The board of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association voted 25-5 to allow high school football, soccer, tennis, field hockey and other fall sports to go on as planned. The PIAA had delayed the start of fall sports by two weeks after Gov. Tom Wolf on Aug. 6 urged that scholastic and recreational youth sports be put off until January, citing the coronavirus pandemic. The PIAA has said it was blindsided and “tremendously disappointed” by the Wolf administration’s recommendation, which is not binding.
