Four Broadcast Games Spearhead Local Teams In WPIAL Playoff Action

Tonight on Beaver County Radio, four local teams will be showcased on their run to the WPIAL Championships in basketball.

On WBVP tonight, the #2 Blackhawk Lady Cougars take on #7 Freeport in the quarterfinals of the 4A Girls’ playoffs at 6:30, with pre-game at 6:05. The second game of that doubleheader will follow as 3A #1 Lincoln Park will battle #8 Seton-LaSalle in Boys’ action. Both games will be played at North Allegheny HS.

On WMBA tonight, #5 Beaver takes on #4 Keystone Oaks in the 4A Girls’ quarterfinals at 6:30, with pre-game at 6:05. Following that will be #7 Rochester taking on #2 Vincentian in the 1A Boys’ quarterfinals. Both games will be played at Moon Area HS.

3a GIRLS AVONWORTH 54 BEAVER FALLS 32

Beaver Falls had a 9-2 lead early before Avonworth went on a 27-7 run on their way to a 54-33 win in the WPIAL 3a girls first round game at Cardinal Wherle High School Wednesday night.  With the win,  the Antelopes advance to the quarter finals against East Allegheny.  The Tigers end the season 10-12.

 

3A Girls’ Basketball Playoffs Begin On Beaver County Radio Tonight

The first round of the 3A Girls’ playoffs in the WPIAL Basketball Championships takes place tonight. #10 Beaver Falls (10-11) takes on #7 Avonworth (14-8) at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School tonight; pre-game is set for 6:05 on Beaver County Radio, and tip-off is at 6:30.

Two other local girls’ teams begin their championship bidding tonight in the 3A playoffs:

#8 Riverside (17-5) battles #9 Brownsville (10-11) at Peters Township HS [8:00pm]

#12 South Side Beaver (11-11) looks to upset #5 Carlynton (15-6) at North Hills HS [6:30pm]

Riverside and Aliquippa advance to the second round in the WPIAL Playoffs

High School basketball is in full effect. On WBVP this afternoon we had Riverside taking on Burgettstown. The Panthers came away with the victory by a final score of 65-42 over Burgettstown. Riverside advances to the second round of the WPIAL playoffs. On WMBA we had Alaiquippa taking on Charleroi. The Quips came away with the victory by a final score of 70-51. The defending PIAA state champions will being going to the second round to face the winner of Ellwood City/Washington game.

After a sluggish start, the #7 Rochester Rams caught fire at the end of the first half, and kept the momentum throughout as they defeat #10 St. Joseph 81-75 in the First Round match in the 1A WPIAL Boys’ Basketball playoffs on Beaver County Radio.

The Rams trailed by 3 after 1, but took a 44-40 lead at the half and didn’t look back. St Joseph ends their season at 13-10, while Rochester improves to 16-6 and will take on #2 Vincentian in the 1A Quarterfinals.

The Spartans’ Daniel Fabregas and Rochester’s Chad Meny were selected as the CCBC Players Of The Game.

Blackhawk and Beaver went into their regular season finale with hopes to reach the playoffs.

After the game, neither team will go.

Central Valley’s victory over Hopewell eliminated Blackhawk, and the Cougars’ 70-49 victory over the Bobcats eliminated Beaver on Beaver County Radio. The Blackhawk victory gives the two teams identical 6-8 records in Section 2-AAAA, tied for 5th and out of playoff contention. Central Valley earns the 4th and final playoff spot in the section at 7-7.

The Bobcats’ Darius Wise and the Cougars’ Trent Michael earned honors as CCBC Players Of The Game.
