LA County sheriff says 8 deputies took Bryant crash photos
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva says eight deputies allegedly took or shared graphic photos of the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash scene, but he ordered them deleted. Villanueva tells NBC News, KCBS-TV and KABC-TV that the existence of the photos was offensive when families of those killed are still grieving. However, it’s unclear when or how the deputies will be disciplined. Bryant, his daughter and seven others died on Jan. 26 when their helicopter flew into a hillside northwest of Los Angeles during cloudy weather. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s Olympic minister says the contract to hold the Tokyo Games only specifies the event has to be held during 2020. Seiko Hashimoto’s response to a question in the upper house of parliament implies the Olympics could be held later in the year and would not have to start on July 24. Hashimoto told parliament “the IOC has the right to cancel the games only if they are not held during 2020.” She says “this can be interpreted to mean the games can be postponed as long as they are held during the calendar year.” IOC officials and Tokyo organizers have repeatedly said they expect the Olympics to open on schedule.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Penguins are attempting to stay upbeat despite their longest losing streak in eight years. The Penguins have dropped six consecutive games for the first time since the 2011-12 season heading into a visit by Ottawa. The slide includes a trip through California last week that featured losses to three teams well outside of the playoff picture. Pittsburgh has been outscored 24-8 during the skid. Captain Sidney Crosby says it’s hard to put a finger on what has gone wrong but he believes a couple of goals will spark a turnaround.

BEIJING (AP) — Organizers of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games say they are on track to complete all competition venues by year-end and have teams in place for test events, despite the devastating impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak that originated in the country late last year. The pledge was made by Beijing Vice Mayor Zhang Jiandong to participants in last week’s World Broadcaster Meeting for the games that was relocated to Madrid because of the outbreak. Zhang and other organizers participated online from committee headquarters in Beijing. Questions have arisen about whether this year’s Tokyo Olympic Games can proceed with the virus still spreading.
