Fred Dean, 68, fearsome pass rusher of 49ers’ dynasty, dies

Fred Dean, 68, fearsome pass rusher of 49ers’ dynasty, dies
By JOSH DUBOW AP Pro Football Writer
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The fearsome NFL pass rusher Fred Dean has died. The death of the former San Francisco 49ers star on Wednesday night was confirmed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Ex-teammate Dwight Hicks says Dean was hospitalized last week with the coronavirus and was on a ventilator. Dean was a key part of the launch of the 49ers’ dynasty. He was an undersized pass rusher who began his career as a second-round pick with the San Diego Chargers in 1975 and ended it in the Hall of Fame after being named an All-Pro twice and making four Pro Bowls. Dean was an All-Pro for the Chargers in 1980 but had his biggest impact after being traded to San Francisco during the 1981 season. Fred Dean was 68 years old.

Claypool’s climb: Steelers rookie WR drawing raves

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver Chase Claypool expects defenses to play him differently following his four-touchdown performance in a win over the Eagles. Claypool says he’s fine with the extra attention if that means it helps his teammates get open. Claypool became just the third rookie in league history to catch three touchdown passes and run for another when he helped the Steelers improve to 4-0 by outlasting Philadelphia 38-29. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says the challenge for Claypool will be to find new ways to be productive now that he can no longer sneak up on opponents.

Jets surprisingly cut Le’Veon Bell after exploring trades
By DENNIS WASZAK Jr. AP Pro Football Writer
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets have surprisingly released disgruntled running back Le’Veon Bell, ending a disappointing tenure after less than two full seasons. The team issued a statement from general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday night in which he says the Jets made the move after having several conversations with Bell and his agent during the last few days and exploring trade options. Bell posted a hands in prayer emoji on Twitter shortly after the Jets’ statement. He will be able to sign with another team after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Joe Morgan, driving force of Big Red Machine, dies at 77

Joe Morgan, driving force of Big Red Machine, dies at 77
By JOE KAY AP Sports Writer
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan has died. A family spokesman says he died at his home Sunday in Danville, California. Morgan was suffering from a nerve condition, a form of polyneuropathy. He became the sparkplug of the Big Red Machine and the prototype for baseball’s artificial turf era. Morgan was a two-time NL Most Valuable Player, a 10-time All-Star and won five Gold Gloves. He could hit a home run, steal a base and disrupt any game with his daring. Most of all, the 5-foot-7 dynamo known for flapping his left elbow drove a Cincinnati team featuring the likes of Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez to World Series titles in 1975 and ’76. Joe Morgan was 77 years old.
