Steelers release three veterans!!!!!

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released veterans William Gay, Robert Golden and Mike Mitchell.

Gay has played 11 seasons in the NFL, 10 of them with the Steelers, the team that selected him in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

Golden was signed by the Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2012, and has spent the last six years in the black and gold. He was entering the final year of a three-year contract he signed in 2016.

Mitchell, who has played nine seasons in the NFL, was entering the final year of a five-year contract.

Mitchell originally signed with the Steelers as an unrestricted free agent in 2014. He played in 61 games for the black and gold, starting all of them. Mitchell had four interceptions, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 23 passes defensed during his time with the Steelers, while also tallying 281 total tackles.

PIAA Second Round Basketball: March 14, 2018

It’s ladies’ night on Beaver County Radio as the second round of the PIAA Basketball playoffs continue. On 1230 WBVP, the Beaver Girls look to advance to the quarterfinals as they take on Villa Maria Academy at Sharon High. Meanwhile, the Lady Bridgers of Ambridge look to upset WPIAL champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in their matchup at Baldwin on 1460 WMBA. Both games are set to tip off at 6:00pm, with pregame on both stations beginning at 5:30.

Pens Murray nearing return from concussion !!!!

Penguins goaltender Murray nearing return from concussion
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray is nearing a return from a concussion that’s sidelined him for two weeks.
Murray faced shots Tuesday before the rest of the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions took the ice. Murray hasn’t played since sustaining the concussion after taking a shot to the facemask in practice late last month.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the team is “encouraged” by Murray’s progress. Sullivan added he expects Murray to travel with the Penguins when they begin a three-game road trip against the New York Rangers on Wednesday night. The Penguins are 4-3 since Murray went down and trail first-place Washington by one point in the crowded Metropolitan Division.
Penguins forward Bryan Rust, who has missed the last two games while dealing with a concussion, has been cleared for contact and could join his teammates on the road swing.

Hopewell and Penn State Grad Paul Posluszny retires after 11 seasons!!!!

Paul Posluszny retires after 11 seasons with Jaguars, Bills

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Paul Posluszny, the second-leading tackler in franchise history, is retiring from the NFL after 11 seasons.
The 33-year-old Posluszny announced his decision in a letter to fans Tuesday, one day before he was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
Posluszny started his career in Buffalo before playing the final seven years in Jacksonville. He led the Jaguars in tackles five times. His 973 stops trail only Daryl Smith (1,089) in Jacksonville’s record book.
Posluszny says “with much sadness but without regret, I realize that I am no longer able to adhere to the unwavering standard of excellence that professional football demands.”
He adds that he can “no longer compete at a level that I find acceptable.”

Austin Meadows Among 8 Players Optioned To Indianapolis!

(ADAM BRADY/Bradenton)– The Pirates made their first significant round of Spring Training roster cuts on Monday, sending a number of top prospects to Minor League camp at Pirate City.

Outfielder Austin Meadows, right-hander Clay Holmes and lefty reliever Jack Leathersich were optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, where they will begin the season. Shortstop Cole Tucker, outfielders Bryan Reynolds and Jason Martin, right-hander Damien Magnifico and catcher Christian Kelley were reassigned to Minor League camp.

Meadows, the Bucs’ No. 2 prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline, made another strong impression this spring as he went 7-for-19 with a home run, a triple, two doubles and eight RBIs. If he remains healthy, the 2013 first-round Draft pick should be ready to make his Major League debut later this year.

Leathersich came into camp competing for a job in the bullpen. In five appearances, he allowed six runs on five hits and six walks while striking out four in 4 2/3 innings. The Pirates have several other lefty relief options in front of closer Felipe Rivero, including non-roster invitee Kevin Siegrist, Josh Smoker and Steven Brault.

Tucker (Pittsburgh’s No. 5 prospect), Reynolds (No. 6) and Martin (No. 22) should begin the season with Double-A Altoona. Tucker was the Pirates’ first-round Draft pick in 2014 and worked exclusively at shortstop this spring. Reynolds and Martin were acquired two months ago in the Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole trades, respectively.

Holmes, the Bucs’ No. 19 prospect, made a solid three-inning start against the Blue Jays in Dunedin on Sunday. At this point of Spring Training, however, it becomes harder to keep starters in camp — if they aren’t competing for Opening Day roster spots — as they build up their pitch counts.

Kelley, 24, should advance to Double-A this season after hitting .243/.340/.295 in 92 games last season for Class A Advanced Bradenton. Magnifico, 26, came to the Pirates in the Minor League phase of the Rule 5 Draft in December; he allowed three runs on two hits and five walks in 3 2/3 innings over five appearances in the Grapefruit League.
