Irene Gianiodis Gartley, 93, of Hopewell Township, passed away on March 11th, 2025 at Heritage Valley Beaver.
She was born in Aliquippa on July 1st, 1931, the youngest of three daughters (Mary Stakias, Alice Valiga) and a daughter of the late James and Afrodite Gianiodis, who immigrated to the United States at the turn of the 20th century from Chios Island, Greece. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Carl T. Gartley. She is survived by three children, Carl (Lynn) Gartley, Karen Gartley and William (Amy) Gartley, all of Hopewell, six grandchildren: Amanda (Chris) Coble, Kasey (Nick) Hoth, Carolyn (Zack) Iorio, Jake, Grace and Faith Gartley, nine great grandchildren: Easton and Tanner Coble, Parker, Camden, Breyson, Penelope and Calliope Hoth, Collins and Jay Iorio; as well as her special nephew, Richard (Michelle) Valiga and nephew, Jim Valiga.
As a young child, Irene attended Greek school on Baker Street in Aliquippa. She spoke fluent Greek which she used to converse with her parents, sisters and acquaintances. As children, those who knew her always knew when she started speaking Greek with her mom or especially her sisters, it was about something that they didn’t need to know about. It was an upbringing that they’ll cherish forever.
Irene graduated from Aliquippa High School with the class of 1949. She worked the counter at the Cozy Corner in Aliquippa and National Electric in Ambridge. Most of all, she was a loving housewife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was also a great cook. She was also a member of the Ohio United Presbyterian Church of Hopewell.
A special thank you goes out to her daughter, Karen, granddaughters, Kasey and Carolyn, as well as the rest of the family for their love and support.
Many thanks to all the staff at Concordia Villa St. Joseph and Vitas for their compassionate care and hard work.
All services are private. Arrangements have been entrusted to the branch of Huntsman Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
Interment took place at Woodlawn Cemetery of Aliquippa.
