Pirates & Reds Split Memorial Day Doubleheader

CINCINNATI (AP)- Bryan Reynolds hit a tiebreaking, two-run triple while the Pirates scored four times in the eighth inning to take Game 1 of their day-night doubleheader with the Reds, 8-5. Starling Marte followed Reynolds’ liner with a shot to center for his sixth homer to put Pittsburgh up, 8-4. Josh Bell also went deep for the Pirates, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Reds took Game 2 as José Iglesias hit his first career grand slam off Mitch Keller in the right-hander’s major league debut, helping Cincinnati earn an 8-1 victory. The slam was part of a six-run first. Derek Dietrich and Yasiel Puig (YAH’-see-ul pweeg) added back-to-back homers in the seventh against Alex McRae.

TWO TORNADOES IN INDIANA COUNTY

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in Indiana County over the weekend. Reports state that one hit Burrell Township and another touched down in Homer City – both on Saturday night. No reports of injuries or damages at this time. This coming after reports heading into the weekend that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has already hit its’ yearly average for total number of tornadoes.

Hundreds of Strangers Attend Vets Funeral

Hundreds of Good Samaritans paid their respects to a Korean War veteran who was buried without any immediate family at his funeral.

Hezekiah Perkins, 90, was laid to rest at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati on Saturday.

The cemetery posted notices asking members of the public to attend Perkins’s funeral since he did not have any immediate family who could attend.

Lynay Straughn, an employee of the cemetery said once she learned his daughter and other family members would not be able to attend – his daughter due to health issues – she felt it was very fitting that this soldier receive long overdue honors.

Spring Grove also arranged for soldiers from nearby Fort Knox, Kentucky to give Perkins full military honors.

Cavs Owner Recovering From Stroke

DETROIT (AP) — Billionaire businessman and majority owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers Dan Gilbert is recovering after suffering symptoms of a stroke and seeking hospital care.

Officials with Detroit-based Quicken Loans said in a statement that Gilbert “received immediate medical attention and is currently recovering comfortably” after going to a hospital early Sunday. Gilbert is the company’s founder and chairman.

His hospitalization comes a month before his Rocket Mortgage is to host Detroit’s first PGA Tour event. It also follows his launch of a ballot drive just days earlier to push auto insurance reform in Michigan. The state Legislature passed a landmark insurance reform bill Friday.

The company said Gilbert’s family requests privacy at this time.

BEE BOXES CLOSE ROAD

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Traffic was disrupted in a Washington state city when boxes holding thousands of bees fell off a truck.

The Moscow-Pullman Daily News reports the boxes fell off a Washington State University truck on Thursday morning in Pullman.

Pullman police took a call on the accident shortly after 7:30 a.m.

Police Chief Gary Jenkins says an officer at the scene described thousands of bees buzzing through the air while university employees put on protective gear and picked up the boxes.

The WSU Department of Entomology has a breeding program and research lab to study and protect bee populations.

The road was closed until just before 10 a.m.
