On Friday night in Wexford, Pennsylvania. The number one seed in 2A WPIAL high school basketball, the Aliquippa Quips were set to take on the number 8 seed Serra Catholic at North Allegheny High School. Aliquippa coming off of a 70-57 win over Nazareth Prep. Their opponents the Serra Catholic Eagles beat Chartiers Houston 58-47 to reach this game.
Playing their relentless style defense, the Quips started off the game on an 8-0 run. Serra Catholic struggled against Aliquippa’s press all first quarter. Forcing turnovers were key for the Quips as they lead the way 15-9 after one quarter of play. In the second quarter the Eagles found some success behind the shooting of Owen Dumbroski. Serra Catholic managed to score 13 points in the quarter but a first half total of 22 points still had the Eagles trailing top seeded Aliquippa 39-22 at halftime.
Owen Dumbroski started off the third quarter off with a three pointer, pulling Serra Catholic to within 14 points. Aliquippa’s athleticism though was just too much to handle. The Eagles continued to struggle while the Quips hot hand, sophomore Josh Pratt just started catching fire. After three quarters the Quips lead 55-40. Josh Pratt outscored the Eagles 7-0 to start the final frame and the Quips never looked back. Outscoring Serra Catholic 21-10, Aliquippa easily dismantled the Eagles by a final score of 76-50.
High scorer of the game was Josh Pratt from Aliquippa with 26 points. Owen Dumbroski lead the way for Serra Catholic with 18 points on the night.
The number one overall seed in 2A, Aliquippa Quips will advance to face the Fort Cherry Rangers on Tuesday February 27th.
