This year commemorates the 70th anniversary of when Beaver County’s first radio station, WBVP, was heard over the airwaves for the the first time on May 25, 1948. To mark the historical event, each week, another .”70th Anniversary Moment” will be showcased on the airwaves and published on the station’s online feeds.

This week’s 70th Anniversary Moment is about Alan Boal. Alan Boal was graduate of Freedom Area High School and was a Freshman attending the University of Pittsburgh when the opportunity to join the staff an upstart radio station in Beaver falls came around in 1948. Boal was part of the original group of announcers Hired by WBVP radio station owners and founders Frank Smith, Tom Price and Charles Onderka, and hosted a popular daily polka show from three until four in the afternoons on WBVP.

As one of the most well known announcers to have worked at Beaver County radio, Boal went on to achieve great things in broadcasting after his work at WBVP, eventually serving as a Latin American Correspondent and Bureau Chief in Miami for ABC. Alan later returned to Pittsburgh in the mid sixties and worked for WTAE television and radio. He also served for a period of time as the President of Pittsburgh Local American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or AFTRA.

This has been a one-of-a-kind event in Beaver County for over 50 years. It’s scheduled to be held on the second Saturday of January (weather permitting) which is January 13, 2018. If there is not sufficient snow on the ground to hold the event that day, it will be postponed to the following Saturday and thereon until it is held, up to the last Saturday in February. If cancelled, the information will be posted by Noon on Thursday on the Beaver County Ice Arena Facebook page.
All ages can participate in regular and modified divisions while attempting to slide down a 160′ snow-covered slope in the fastest time. Trophies will be awarded to all first and second place winners. Spectators are welcome!
Beaver County Humane Society has the chance to earn a “Big Thanks Bonus” of $16,000 from PetSmart Charities when 500 of our shelter animals are adopted from the PetSmart locations that house BCHS adoptable pets, which are in Monaca (115 Wagner Rd.), Cranberry Township (1717 Route 228), & New Castle (2573 West State St. ) by JANUARY 28, 2018.
Reaching the 500 adoptions goal and receiving the $16,000 grant from PetSmart would go a long way towards helping the BCHS achieve its mission, while improving the quality of life in Beaver County for pets and the people who love them.

The First Baptist Church of Rochester, 301 Adams St. in Rochester is holding their 44th annual Outdoor Nativity Scene December 21-23 from 6-8 PM. The Live Nativity features live animals and actors.
