25TH RUSYN FOOD FESTIVAL AUG 2-3

25TH RUSYN FOOD FESTIVAL AUG 2-3

A quarter of a century.

That’s how long the parishioners of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church have been holding its hugely successful Rusyn Food Festival.

A western PA tradition, the festival features its delicious Slavic homemade foods Aug. 2 and 3.

The event is sponsored by St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Ambridge and is held in the air conditioned Parish Center at 722 Fifth St. in Ambridge.

Popular Carpatho-Rusyn foods available in addition to pirohy stuffed with potato/cheese or sauerkraut, will include dumpling or noodle halushky, kolbasy and kraut, holubky (stuffed cabbage), borscht (beet soup), chicken soup, potato/bean soup, Rusyn summer salads and others

Also featured this year is the parish’s award-winning potato/kobasy pirohy..

Baked goods will include traditional Rusyn favorites like nut, apricot and poppyseed rolls, the church’s famous palachinky (fruit and cheese-filled crepes), paska breads, and Rusyn torte along with other tasty specialties.

Schedule is as follows

:Aug. 2, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. –frozen foods and take out items available only.

Aug. 3, 11 a.m. -6 p.m. take out and eat in

The public is invited and admission is free.

The Carpatho-Rusyns are an East Slavic group that immigrated to the United States from the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe. There are about 60,000 people of Rusyn background in western Pennsylvania with another 40,000 in eastern Ohio.

St. John’s serves Orthodox families from a large area including the Beaver Valley, Moon, Coraopolis, Sewickley, and Cranberry Twp.

Rabies Vaccinations by Helicopter

The United States Department of Agriculture will begin distribution of rabies vaccinations by helicopter in Beaver County on August 18, and continue through August 22, as part of their National Rabies Management Program.  Baits containing the rabies vaccination will be dispersed by helicopter in order to reach desired locations that would otherwise be difficult to access.  During this time period, area residents may see helicopters moving within the same area multiple times in a slow manner.  While this could be viewed unusual and alarming, it is necessary in order to ensure sufficient baiting.

Oral rabies vaccines produce little threat to humans and animals when exposed, but the public is asked to avoid contact with the baits to increase the likelihood of consumption by raccoons.

Attached to this email is a fact sheet published by the USDA with additional information about the vaccination distribution, including what to do if a bait must be moved or disposed of; what to do if a pet eats a bait; and who to call concerning accidental contact with baits.

The event as always is free an open to the public.  It will be held at the Brady’s Run Park Baseball fields which are located off of Achortown Road near the Chippewa/Brighton Township line.  Note that there is a detour which needs to be taken if coming from Brady’s Run Park Road.  Follow the posted detour signs to get to Achortown Road.
