Slippery Rock at Millersville — Saturday Preview

Slippery Rock takes its 2-0 record on the road Saturday afternoon when The Rock visits Millersville for a noon kickoff. SRU is coming off an impressive 59-35 victory at East Stroudsburg, while Millersville enters the game 0-2 after falling 40-17 to California (Pa.).

The Rock offense has been explosive through two games, averaging 52 points and 492.5 yards per game. Running back JayJay Jordan is a player to watch. He’s averaging 125.5 rushing yards per game and is coming off a monster performance against East Stroudsburg: 228 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries.

Quarterback DaOne Owens has also been efficient, completing nearly 70% of his passes for 400 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. As a team, Slippery Rock has yet to throw an interception or lose a fumble this season.

The concern for The Rock is the defense, particularly against the run. Opponents are averaging 305.5 rushing yards per game, so that’s an area SRU will want to clean up before next week’s PSAC West opener at California.

Bottom line: Slippery Rock has a significant opportunity to keep its unbeaten start going. If Jordan and the offense continue producing big plays and The Rock avoids turnovers, Millersville will have its hands full.
