Beaver County Amateur Astronomers Discuss Upcoming Solar Eclipse, Emphasizing Safety

There is going to be a solar eclipse that will be in sight for the United States on August 21, and it is set to last for 2 hours and 45 minutes. Questions have arisen as to if it’s possible for anyone to look at it, as well as safety issues for pets.

Curt DiGiovine and Michael Colalella from the Beaver County Amateur Astronomers answered those questions and more in an August 18 interview with Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County. They discussed the proper materials and preparation to view the eclipse, the irreversible damage that may occur if one does not prepare properly, and what to expect visually; among other details.

Old Economy Village To Host River City Brass Band On August 20

The River City Brass Band will be returning to Old Economy Village in Ambridge on Sunday, August 20 beginning at 5:00pm. The show will feature the works of the country’s only all-brass classical ensemble, and it will be performed in the Village garden.

Village curator Sarah Buffington joined Matt Drzik on August 16 to talk about this upcoming event, as well as what else is going on the Village in the coming months.

Beaver Valley Community Concert Association Presents Its 2017-18 Season

For the last 80 years, the Beaver Valley Community Concert Association has been instrumental in bringing the finest talents of music and song to Beaver County, and year 81 looks to be no different. The 2017-18 season features four strong acts, including (with corresponding dates):

The Four Freshmen (Tuesday, Sept. 19)
ABBA Fab (Monday, Oct. 9)
Sidestreet Strutters Jazz Band (Tuesday, Apr. 24)
Tony Pace (Thursday, May 10)

BVCCA Co-Presidents Norma Kehr and Jean Macaluso, as well as Publicity Chairwoman Rhonda Ficca joined Matt Drzik on A.M. Beaver County on August 8 to discuss this upcoming season and sample some of the acts’ work.

Beaver Falls Celebrates 9th Community Crime Watch Day

The City of Beaver Falls, in conjunction with Geneva College, hosted their 9th Annual Community Crime Watch Day on Geneva’s campus on College Hill. Many law enforcement officers, vendors, and citizens made their way out to the event organized by the City and committee led by Regina Jones.

Matt Drzik and Pat Septak were out with the Prize Van and Personality Prize Wheel, and they thank those who put on this event for another great evening of food, fun, information, and good times. If you missed it, check these pictures out!

Steelers sign Villanueva for four years!!!

Alejandro Villanueva was signed by  the Steelers today to a four-year contract. Villanueva started all 16 regular season games last year, as well as the three postseason games, at left tackle. He was part of an offensive line that helped Le’Veon Bell break records, as well as allowing only 17 sacks, the fewest in Big Ben’s career. In 2015 Villanueva played in all 16 games, starting the final 10 after Kelvin Beachum was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Villanueva made the most of his opportunity to turn into one of the top lineman in the NFL after a career as a U.S. Army Ranger.

Ryan Matsook Talks About New Role As Western Beaver AD On Sports Slam

After a banner year that saw him coach the Beaver Falls Tigers to their first WPIAL title since 1984 and their first PIAA gold in football, Ryan Matsook left his position as BF’s head coach in March, and is now the new Athletic Director at Western Beaver High School in Industry.

Matsook phoned in to the Saturday Sports Slam on July 22 to discuss with Matt Drzik and Greg Benedetti about his new role, including what his duties are in helping Western Beaver Athletics, the similarities in his current and past jobs, and how he looks at the new six-class WPIAL format.

Enon Valley Community Day & Bluegrass Festival Set For July 15

The Enon Valley Historical Society and Lawrence County Tourism is presenting the 41st annual Enon Valley Community Day and Bluegrass Festival on July 15. This day will feature several events and attractions, such as fireworks, re-enactments, and live music from bands such as Echo Valley, Lost Lonesome & Foggy, East of Enon, and the Allegheny Drifters.

Hap Wichryk from the Historical Society joined Matt Drzik in a discussion about the festivities to be expected, as well as the importance of showcasing bluegrass music in a festival setting.

Enon Valley Community Day on July 15th

Tune in to Beaver County radio on July 13th from 8:40-9:00 AM for a live interview with Hap Wichryk here at WBVP & WMBA.  He’ll be talking about the Enon Valley Community Day this year!  The theme of the parade is “A Salute to Veterans”.  This event is sponsored by the Enon Valley Historical Society and Lawrence County Tourism Association.  The day starts off 7-11 AM  with breakfast followed by the parade at 10 AM, music all day long from the Bluegrass Festival and Dj Sully.  At 10 PM, there will be an exciting fireworks display to end the night. That’s the 41st Annual Enon Valley Community Day.
